Black Tome is one of the more punishing bosses in NTE due to its unique control-lock mechanic and relentless combo pressure.
Control-Lock Mechanic
Black Tome’s signature ability locks the player’s character out of all controls for a set duration when hit by specific chain attacks. While locked:
- Cannot trigger Esper Cycle reactions
- Cannot switch characters
- Cannot use skills or dodge
- The boss continues attacking during the lock period
This makes avoiding the chain attacks entirely the top priority, especially below 50% HP where the lock triggers more frequently.
Combo Patterns
Black Tome attacks with short intervals and frequent multi-hit combos. The tells are subtle — small movements or energy gathering before each combo string. Players must learn to read these tells and use Critical Dodge (perfect timing dodge) to avoid damage while positioning for counter-attacks.
Phase 2 (Below 50% HP)
Below 50% HP, Black Tome increases its combo frequency and the control-lock attacks become more common. Defensive play becomes essential — prioritize dodging over dealing damage, and only commit to offense during clear safe windows.
